Rep. Kahl Asking Walker to Include WDE Funds in Budget

“A Madison area lawmaker is calling on Governor Scott Walker to include in his capital budget a request made by Dane County and World Dairy Expo for the construction of two livestock buildings and additional exhibit space at the Alliant Energy Center. Rep. Robb Kahl of Monona says if the project is approved, it would receive $14.2 million in general funds that would be matched by county and private dollars

“As noted in the summary of project requests, the World Dairy Expo is the preeminent international dairy cattle and trade show,” Kahl said. “It not only exhibits the finest in dairy genetics, the latest advances in technology, and equipment available to the dairy industry, but also affords the state of Wisconsin an opportunity to showcase our great state to people from all over the world.”

The international dairy show has a significant positive economic impact on the state, according to Kahl. Northstar Economics, Inc., reported in June 2012 that World Dairy Expo has an overall economic impact of over $50.2 million on the regional economy.

“Some of the persons who attend the World Dairy Expo are cattle owners who may spend up to $40,000 just to bring their cattle to our state,” Kahl observed. “Their livestock represents a significant investment and we need to have facilities in place that demonstrate to them that the World Dairy Expo is the place to be for the foresee able future.”

With the governor’s approval, the project would be included in the 2013-2015 Capital Budget recommendations that are scheduled to be released this week.

The Alliant Energy Center has created a task force, which is being lead by former WDE General Manager Mark Clarke, to study the needs of the facility. The center consists of 164 acres and includes the Exhibition Hall, Dane County Coliseum, and the agricultural facilities for county, state and private events.”
